Support and Benefits For Foster Carers
The Bournemouth Fostering Team offers a wealth of support – during the application process and throughout your time as a carer. You can also network with other carers at our monthly meetings.
Being a foster carer can be challenging as well as rewarding, so if your application is successful we make sure that you’re ready to become a foster carer who can meet different children’s needs.
You’ll also have your own Supervising Social Worker. They will be with you throughout your fostering journey to make sure that you have the skills and support you need to help you to grow and develop as a foster carer - through training opportunities, specialist childcare support and therapeutic, health and educational advice.
Monthly foster carer meetings
There is also a strong network of carers to provide advice and support, sharing their experiences and knowledge. We hold foster carer meetings throughout the year – a chance to develop your personal support network within Bournemouth’s fostering community, and increase your knowledge and skills by hearing from professional speakers. You can also share your experiences with other carers.
To strengthen ties between our foster carers and their families, we hold a number of social events. These includes our annual Summer Picnic, Christmas Mince Pie Morning and Foster Carer Awards Evening.
Support for your own child
If you’re a foster carer and have your children, they’ll be invited to join the Funky Monkeys support group - where they can meet other children, enjoy social events and just have fun.
There is an out of office emergency helpline, so you can always speak to a social worker outside of office hours and on Bank Holidays.
We subscribe to Foster Talk, which provides a range of foster carer support services. They understand that fostering involves the whole household, so everyone gets to enjoy their benefits.
Our carers are also part of The Fostering Network, which supports foster carers and improves the lives of children in care. They are the UK's leading charity for everyone with a personal or professional involvement in fostering.
We pay allowances for each child placed to cover expenses, including clothing funds, pocket money, savings, household and petrol costs.
In addition, we pay a fostering fee, determined by the foster carer’s level of skill and experience.
There are also tax allowances for foster carers.
And you will receive a foster carer ID card which will give you discounts at various leisure and retail outlets in Bournemouth and the surrounding area.
